Hey Tim,

I found this article on IBM's site that might be worth checking out. They describe some of the new elements that the W3C is working on. Like they said, its not set in stone yet but the stuff they're thinking about is pretty cool and it should make life a lot easier.

The article is at http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/library/x-html5/

This all sounds exciting but I wonder how long it will before its mainstream and supported by all the major browsers. Do you think MS will actually conform IE to the standards that the other browsers set in place?

@Jordan - When we talk about how quick it becomes mainstream and supported by all major browsers, it really depends on the feature in question. Since a lot of the spec is based on existing implementations, those features have a good chance of being 'mainstream' rather quickly. Like I mentioned above, getters and setters for example, are already implemented by everyone except IE.

As for whether or not IE will play along...I for one am feeling pretty good about that. I think IE8, while far from perfect, is a huge step in the right direction for MS. There is a definite effort being made to drastically improve their standards support. They have a long way to go (I believe they're scoring about 20% on the ACID 3 Test as of IE8 beta v2), but there are noticeable improvements in CSS support, and new features in JS (DOM storage, Selectors API).

So I guess, yes, they'll conform with the standards, the only question is how quickly. It will take some time, but I am hopeful it will be quicker than people may think.
