My first thought is that it's about time IE came up with a way for designers to control the layout across multiple platforms. And then I have to stop in my tracks a say, 'If Microsoft would simply abide by the rules of the W3C in the first place, to create a browser that uses established standards, then they wouldn't have to be designing a widget to fix their problems.

The solution is to meet standards. Period!
Wouldn't it just be simpler to make IE8 fully standards compliant - that way no-one would need to add any extra lines of anything.

@Tony - Actually, the issue is that IE8 is going to be at least closer to fully standards compliant. As a result, there will be rendering differences between it and IE7, and they are trying to come up with a way to not 'break' layouts already out there - hence the X-UA-Compatible declaration.
